Newark Free Tax Prep Program

Newark Free Tax Prep is an initiative under the Newark Asset Building Coalition (NABC) that provides free tax prep services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Through the Newark Free Tax Program, we offer free tax help to people with $66,000 or less taxable income on their tax return. Newark Free Tax Prep has been crucial in helping hard-working families in Newark take advantage of all of the tax credits they are eligible for including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and education credits.

Through the Newark Free Tax Prep program, tax returns are prepared by trained and certified volunteers. These volunteers undergo at least 20 hours of training and must pass an exam specified by the IRS before they are allowed to prepare and submit a tax return. Our staff and volunteers are held to the highest standards of confidentiality, quality, and customer service. Your tax information is only used in preparation of your tax return.

The NABC will work to promote financial independence and stability for residents of the City of Newark, and provide residents with financial education, access to wealth-building programs, and extended services around personal finance. The Steering Committee is made up of key Newark-based stakeholders including: United Way of Greater Newark, New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, Newark Alliance, La Casa De Don Pedro, Urban League of Essex County, and the New Community Corporation. NABC is funded by The Prudential Foundation and Citi.
